Get to know us

Keystone Amateur Radio Society (KARS) is a welcoming ham radio club in Ebensburg, PA, created to give beginners a place to learn without pressure and grow with support. We started KARS because many new operators felt lost after getting licensed, unsure of what to say on the mic, how to use their gear, or where to find help. Our club bridges that gap with monthly meetings, hands-on demos, and events like HF/VHF operations, POTA, SOTA, contests, and Field Day. No license or equipment is required, just curiosity and a willingness to learn.

KARS is made up of hams with experience ranging from brand-new licensees to operators with more than 50 years on the air. Everyone has something to teach and something to learn, and that mix of backgrounds makes us stronger. We work side-by-side on activities that bring people together, building antennas, exploring new modes, activating parks and summits, and in doing so we’ve built the kind of team this area hasn’t seen in a long time. What unites us is the desire to find like-minded operators who want to get outdoors, explore, and have fun with radio.

Our mission

The Keystone Amateur Radio Society exists to promote the amateur radio hobby by providing information, education, camaraderie, and opportunity for all who are interested. We are especially dedicated to helping new operators bridge the gap between licensing and operating, ensuring every member has the tools, training, and encouragement needed to succeed on the air.

Our vision

Our vision is to build a strong, supportive community of amateur radio operators in Western Pennsylvania and beyond, one that inspires lifelong learning, encourages experimentation, and provides opportunities for service, friendship, and fun. We aim to be the region’s most beginner-friendly radio club, where anyone with curiosity can find a path into the hobby and a group of friends to share it with.

Meet the KARS Leadership Team

The leadership of the Keystone Amateur Radio Society (KARS) blends technical know-how, organization, and a welcoming, hands-on spirit. Together they set goals and bylaws, guide growth, build community events, mentor new operators (including VE testing and starter-radio support), and keep the club on a strong footing with finances, filings, and site agreements.

Our mission “to promote the amateur radio hobby by providing information, education, camaraderie, and opportunity for all interested individuals” guides everything we do.
